Why I am Part of the Queer Nightlife Fund | Mark O’Brien, Polyglamorous

Mark O’Brien, Producer, Polyglamorous

Hello this is Mark O’Brien of Polyglamorous. We’re a queer nightlife collective that has been putting on events in San Francisco and beyond for over five years. Over the course of working on this project I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with some amazing artists- DJ’s, performers, dancers, lighting designers, set designers, even our door people and coat check people are amazing. The folks are the backbone of the scene. They’re the ones that make the fun happen, and without them, where would we be?

Unfortunately in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the event cancellations and the venue closures, many of these folks are in a very precarious situation. We created the Bay Area Queer Nightlife Fund as a solution to help some of these folks who are in dire need at this time.

We are soliciting donations, and if you have the means, I strongly encourage you to contribute. Think about what you would have spent if you’d gone out this weekend (if you could have). Think about what nightlife means to you. And think about what you would give to help sustain a vibrant and rich queer nightlife scene in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Our goal is to raise $200,000 by March 31. It’s an auspicious goal, and we’re already off to a great start, but we need your help. We have a long way to go.

If you work in nightlife, and you find that most of your income has vanished overnight, we encourage you to apply for a grant. We’re accepting applications through March 31. After that, we’ll review the applications and we are going to issue 200 grants based on need.

In the meantime, we’re going to have some fun. Sunday afternoon we are going to do a streaming event, so at the time you’d normally be going to the Eagle or Lone Star for Beer Bust, or hanging out on the patio at El Rio, you can be chilling at home, sheltering in place, listening to some local DJ’s and some other little surprises we’ve got cooked up for you. I hope you’ll tune in on Sunday afternoon.

I wish you the best. I hope you’re safe. Stay well. I hope we all get through this together, and IO look forward to sharing a dance floor with you again soon. Peace!
